Why Greenlane sounds like this
A pipe plays a slow tune that rises and falls back home, and a lamb answers from far across the park. Cornwall Park was given to the city by Sir John Logan Campbell in 1901 and still runs as a working farm around Maungakiekie, sheep and all. The pipe is a shepherd's, in the middle of the city.
Inside the chime
Greenlane's chime runs about 4 seconds, in two parts. Every station's chime ends on its family's signature, so you can tell roughly where you are by ear.

Greenlane's own motif 3.5 s

The South family's brass 0.8 s
A short brass note, then a longer one a fourth higher. With 21 stations, Grafton and Parnell down to Pukekohe and Manukau, it is the largest family.
