Why Penrose sounds like this
Low metal pipes climb and high pipes answer, with a hammer tapping every beat. Penrose is industrial Auckland: workshops, scrapyards and warehouses on both sides of the tracks. The chime is played on what you'd find there, offcuts of pipe tuned and struck. Onehunga-West trains branch off here.
Inside the chime
Penrose's chime runs about 4 seconds, in two parts. Every station's chime ends on its family's signature, so you can tell roughly where you are by ear.

Penrose's own motif 2.8 s
Scrap-metal marimba. No other station plays it.

The South family's brass 0.8 s
A short brass note, then a longer one a fourth higher. With 21 stations, Grafton and Parnell down to Pukekohe and Manukau, it is the largest family.
