Why Papatoetoe sounds like this
The old town-centre clock ticks under a chime that steps down, then strikes once low. Papatoetoe was its own borough from 1946 and its own city from 1965 until 1989, and in 1928 a clock went up above the Central Theatre on St George Street to strike the hours on a ship's bell. The chime is that clock striking the hour.
Inside the chime
Papatoetoe's chime runs about 4 seconds, in two parts. Every station's chime ends on its family's signature, so you can tell roughly where you are by ear.
